I am looking to start raising a few pigs either this spring or next. Looking for heritage breeds. The way I see it is if I am going to go through the effort of raising the pigs I want the end product to be as good as possible. I find the pork from modern breeds to be bland, flavorless and to lean. I was in BC last month and got to try some pork from a Gloucestershire Old Spot and was blown away.. what a difference!!

If anyone out there knows of where to get heritage weaners (GOS in particular) let me know.

rare breeds canada would be a good start they have a list of breeds and breeders good luck finding gos this side of the country i keep tamworths they are out all year, check out my web site dundasheritagefarm.com :lol:

berkshires will be easier to find the white pigs are no good out side as they get sun burn , you will have to pay about 80 / 120 for pigs, the white ones you will pay 30 /55

just to followup to the original post....you can have excellent non heritage pigs without issue if they are fed right! I have both heritage and non heritage and most people cannot tell the difference. they can tell the difference between home raised and commercial pork though!

From what I've seen most pigs go "heritage" pretty quick when they're not kept inside massive barns, especially if you breed wild boar blood into them. I'd bet one generation would do it for you.

Potbelly/boar crosses can create a good pig; you can pick the potbelly's up as pets on Kijiji.

Many provincial government ag websites have listings of heritage breeders, too.
