Hi Ken Boy

Mung beans are the bean sprouts used in Chinese cooking
if you use a large plastic jar like you get sweets in. put in some mung beans just cover the bottom, then place a new dishcloth over the top & secure with an elastic band.
Run water through the cloth to cover the beans & then invert the jar and let the water out, stand in a dark cupboard (the jar not you) & repeat this daily for about one week.
You should then have a jar full of bean sprouts

Thanks for the infomation Sausagemaker
Would you add more beans daily !!!
I take it that you leave the jar upside down so the beans are on the damp cloth!!   :P

Hi Ken Boy

No don't add any extra bean's they will need the space for growth, after the first harvest you will know if you can add any more, you are looking for about 2" of growth & should take about one week.
As for the jar I normally keep it upright, but please make sure you have drained the water properly or the beans will rot, you just need to keep them damp. I never tried the other way but cannot see any reason why it would not work as long as the beans are not sitting in water.

If you put them in the airing cupboard they grow even faster.

If you've got a tree hugger shop near you can buy specialist bean sprouters for about 6. They're about 6" diameter with 3 levels so you can sprout loads at once.

No need, Josh

Hi,

Sorry Josh, I really don't see the need for specialist sprouters. What I've always used is a 1 litre fruit juice jar, with some terylene gauze tied over the mouth. That doesn't stop you adding water and draining it off, and lets air in nicely.

By the way, sausagemaker forgot to give one essential snippet of info. When sprouting beans, add plenty of water every day, rinse the beans with it, and pour as much off as will drain. Then leave in a warm _dark_ place until the next day. When the beans are sprouted as you want them, rinse once more and keep in the fridge till you need to use them. They'll keep a good week.
All the best - Ian
